I bet that the first thing you do once you’ve opened your eyes is checking you phone because you are a social media & internet addict, like the rest of us. But this habit should not me on your list of things to do once you wake up.

4 Things to do Once You Wake Up

Here are some simple habits that you should do once you wake up to make your day better.

1. Don’t touch your phone

Or tablet. Or laptop. Basically any device that connects to the internet. I know that it is hard (it is almost impossible for me), but try to keep your mind away from e-mails, notifications and news (which are usually bad and sad news).

Why would you want to do this?

It’s simple: you will keep your mind fresh and away from any possible negative influence that will ruin your day from its first minutes.

2. Open the window

Even if it is winter or just a very chilly morning, open the window for a couple a minutes. Let the fresh air of the morning wake you up

Why would you want to do this?

We yawn because our brain does not have enough oxygen and through yawning it gets the extra oxygen that he needs. Opening the window will bring fresh air (oxygen) into the room and it will help your brain wake up and you will get rid of the sleepy mood.

3. Stretch

I don’t like to workout in the morning, because I sweat a lot (it doesn’t matter how difficult the exercises are) and I have to shower, which means I have to wake up earlier. Stretching is not as difficult as working out because it does not focus on the muscles. It’s just a light warm up.

Why would you want to do this?

Because it will help your body eliminate faster the toxins that it gathered throughout the night. Which is good and healthy for you. Also light physical exercises – like stretching –  will help you wake up faster and will give you the energy that you need to start the day. No sweat, no fancy workout tools, just a boost of energy.

You can also try do dance on some crazy songs. It works as well.

4. Drink a glass of water

Doctors recommend us to drink liquids (like water, tea and freshly squeezed juices) to keep ourselves hydrated. Drinking enough liquids will keep your skin, hair and nails healthy and hydrated which will prevent early wrinkles or early hair loss.

Why would you want to do this?

Drinking a glass of water on an empty stomach will help your body boosting energy and it will also help eliminating the toxins. So maybe you should start testing this theory and drink one glass of water when you wake up.

I have some work to do on the “don’t touch your phone” part, because I am so addicted to it. I also use a smart alarm app, so I have to literally touch it to turn off the alarm and it remains glued to my had for another 15 minutes or so. I’m hopeless.

  • I usually leave my phone in my office at night, or living room, not in my bedroom at all–that definitely removes any temptation to go for that first. My first thing is usually just, brushing teeth, washing my face, doing my hair and getting dressed. I always try to drink a full cup of water with my morning vitamins, though.

    • I though about leaving my phone somewhere else outside the bedroom, but I love so much the smart alarm: it really helps me waking up smoothly.

  • I need to add drink water first to my list! I’m trying to drink more water in general so this is a good tip!

    • I also struggle with that. I’m trying to drink one glass of water 30 mins before & after each meal. This is how I make sure I drink at least 6 glasses of water/day.

  • I am so bad about my phone, I really need to stop checking it so much. I am at least pretty good about water – I usually have at least a glass of water in the morning even before my coffee.

    • Just keep drinking that glass of water before your coffee and you will manage to add more glasses of water to your routine.

    I definitely look at my phone right away. Oops but I find it snaps me out of the zombie state I’m in because I’m totally not a morning person. I love the idea of stretching, I used to do 8am yoga on Saturdays and it was such a great start to the day!

  • I’ve never been one to check social media first thing in the morning, which I really like because I don’t have that temptation when I pick up my phone. I listen to audiobooks as I get ready, so I carry my phone with me, but I never really have the urge to check anything. :) And drinking a glass of water is so helpful when you get up!

    I love the idea of opening the window for a few minutes to get some fresh. It sounds really refreshing–even in winter. :) And I definitely need to make more time to move and stretch when I get up. I usually get up at the last minute, but I should work on getting up just a few minutes earlier. Great tips!
